Learn to Row

Learning to Row on Caldecotte Lake

Learn to Row course information

Throughout the year the club runs a number of courses for beginners. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

Each course runs for 8 consecutive weeks with one session per week either on Saturdays 10:00 – 12:00 or Sundays 8:00 – 10:00

Session 1 and 2 are land based learning about the movement patterns and technique, and getting familiar with the rowing terminology. Sessions 3 to 8 are mainly on the water in stable single (1 person) and double (2 people) sculling boats, building on the skills learned in the land sessions and getting confident in the boats.

Following completion of the course if you would like to continue rowing you will be able to join our development squad as part of Group 1. Training session times for Group 1 are Saturday 9:30am and Monday 6:30pm on the water throughout the summer, with a land training session on Thursday evenings.

Please click here for information about the different groups and group progression - our goal is to provide something for everyone, whether that's learning a new skill, meeting some new people, getting a bit fitter, or training to compete at events.

The cost of the course is £175 which covers the 8 week course plus 2 months Development membership.

Did you know?

It's a common misconception that rowing is an upper body sport. In reality, the majority of the power in the rowing stroke comes from the legs. To learn more, see this explanation of the rowing stroke from British Rowing.

Rowing is one of the best sports for an all over body workout. It uses something like 85% of the body's muscles!
