Cross Channel Row Update

It looks like the Cross Channel Row is coming together thanks to Helen S and Lou’s best efforts. They have been in touch with MK Don’s Sports Education Trust (SET), the Mayor’s choice of charity in order to jointly run the event with Ashley Whitmore. They will also be joined by Judith Hildreth from SET who will coordinate the fundraising. The row is now planned for the weekend of the 26th-29th April, weather dependant. Two boats filled with a mixture of MKRC rowers, SET volunteers and possibly some corporate volunteers will row across together. One of these boats will be ‘elite’ group and will be aiming to break the record crossing time, whilst the other will be a little more relaxed. This doesn’t mean they don’t need to be fit though! Endurance training will commence for all rowers on the 1st January, with all non-MKRC joining the circuit sessions to build up fitness. The final part of training will take place on Hayling island, near Portsmouth on the 9th-10th February to test the rowers on the sea.

Fundraising

With the help of SET, MKRC will be organising three large fundraising events throughout February and March. These will involve a games/quiz evening at the Double Tree Hilton at the start of February. There will also be an ergo challenge at the MK Dons stadium on a big match day, where a celebrity and a few supporters will challenge an MKRC member to a 2km race. There will also be ergos outside Asda on the same day with some willing volunteers promoting the project. Each rower will pay £100 towards their own costs and will be asked to raise an individual target of £300 sponsorship money. Judith from SET will work with the Mayor to raise money through their many business contacts, hopefully bringing in a large amount of money. There will be a ‘Just Giving’ account for sponsorship and we will be asking you all to approach your friends, family, employers and local businesses. All money raised will be split 50/50 between SET and MKRC. This is a fantastic opportunity for MKRC to raise some cash so please all embrace this with enormous enthusiasm and support those who really are putting their backs into it!
